Exposure to ambient air pollution from traffic during infancy is associated with lung function deficits in children up to eight years of age, particularly among children sensitized to common allergens, according to a new study.

Vaikka puun polttaminen on uusiutuvana energialähteenä ilmastoteko, erityisesti taitamaton puunpoltto tuottaa haitallisia päästöjä lähiympäristöön sekä oman perheen että naapurien hengitettäväksi. Siksi on hyvä tietää, miten puuta poltetaan oikein. Päästöjen määrä ja haitallisuus ovat pienimmillään, kun poltettava puu on kuivaa ja palaminen hallittua.

Pääkaupunkiseudun ilmanlaatu oli menneenä kesänä valtaosan ajasta hyvä tai tyydyttävä, koska viileä ja sateinen sää sekoitti ja laimensi nopeasti ilman epäpuhtaudet. Myöskään Suomen rajojen ulkopuolelta ei kulkeutunut merkittävässä määrin ilmansaasteita.

 Cities – with their concrete canyons, isolated greenery, and congested traffic – create seemingly chaotic and often powerful wind patterns known as urban flows. Carried on these winds are a variety of environmental hazards, including exhaust particles, diesel fumes, chemical residues, ozone, and the simple dust and dander produced by dense populations.

 Pine trees are one of the biggest contributors to air pollution. They give off gases that react with airborne chemicals — many of which are produced by human activity — creating tiny, invisible particles that muddy the air.

 Hot summer days cause in large cities very seldom great happiness among inhabitants. On those days the air is highly polluted with automobile and industrial emissions what makes breathing difficult and unhealthy.
